About Chandipur Beach
Chandipur-on-Sea is Odisha’s most unusual beach — famous not for its swimming but for its remarkable tidal phenomenon. At low tide, the sea retreats up to 5 kilometres from the shoreline, exposing the sea floor and leaving behind pools, sand patterns, and occasionally stranded marine life. Visitors literally walk where the sea was an hour ago.
The Vanishing Sea Phenomenon
The dramatic tidal retreat of Chandipur is caused by the geography of the continental shelf and the shallow Bay of Bengal at this point. Twice daily, the sea recedes dramatically — you can walk hundreds of metres into what was open water, collecting shells, watching crabs, and experiencing the strange sensation of standing on the sea floor. As the tide returns, it comes back quickly — visitors must be aware of tide times.
Historical Significance
Chandipur is also where India’s DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) conducts its Integrated Test Range for missile testing — including the famous BrahMos, Agni, and Prithvi missiles. The facility is not open to visitors but its presence explains the strictly enforced restrictions on drones and aircraft in the area.
The Visitor Experience
Visiting at low tide and watching the sea return is a meditative, almost surreal experience. The beach has casuarina groves ideal for picnicking, and the nearby Chandipur market sells excellent salted fish and local sweets. The OTDC hotel has comfortable sea-facing rooms with a unique view of the receding tide.
