About Gopalpur Beach
Gopalpur-on-Sea is Odisha’s most genteel beach destination — a former trading port with a distinctly old-world charm, lined with century-old bungalows, swaying palms, and a working lighthouse that has guided sailors since the colonial era. Unlike the more frenetic Puri, Gopalpur is unhurried and romantic — the ideal place to simply sit and watch the blue Bay of Bengal.
Historical Port Heritage
Gopalpur was an ancient seaport from where Odishan traders (known as Sadhabas) sailed to Southeast Asia, particularly to Bali, Java, and Sumatra, establishing the maritime silk route that carried Odishan culture across the sea. The annual Bali Yatra festival in Cuttack celebrates this seafaring heritage. The lighthouse, built in 1936, still guides fishing boats today.
The Visitor Experience
Gopalpur’s beach is ideal for long evening walks as the sun sets into the horizon. The rocky headland at the north end of the beach is a perfect sunset viewpoint. Small guesthouses serve fresh seafood — prawn curry, crab masala, and grilled fish — just metres from the waves. The town’s heritage bungalows, some converted into hotels, transport you to another era.
