Most people visit Ladakh in summer when the roads are open and the weather is forgiving. But winter Ladakh — with temperatures plunging to -25°C and the landscape blanketed in white — offers experiences you simply cannot get any other time of year.

The Chadar Trek — Walking on a Frozen River

The legendary Chadar Trek follows the frozen Zanskar River through a canyon so narrow that there’s no road — only ice. For centuries, this was the only winter route connecting Zanskar to Leh. Today, it’s considered one of the world’s most extreme treks.

Snow Leopard Spotting

Winter is prime season for spotting the elusive snow leopard in the Hemis National Park. As prey descends to lower altitudes, these magnificent cats follow. Guided treks from Rumbak village offer the best chances, though patience is essential.

Frozen Pangong Lake

The iconic blue lake turns to a sheet of ice in winter. Walking on the frozen surface with snow-capped mountains all around is surreal. The silence is profound — you can literally hear your own heartbeat.

Practical Considerations

  • Fly into Leh — road access is closed in winter
  • Acclimatize for 2-3 days before any activity
  • Layer up: thermal + down jacket + windproof outer shell
  • Carry hand and toe warmers — they’re lifesavers
  • AMS (altitude sickness) is real — carry Diamox and stay hydrated

The Monasteries in Snow

Thiksey Monastery perched on a hilltop against a snow-white landscape looks like something from a dream. Hemis Monastery hosts its famous winter festival with masked dances. The monks’ red robes against the white snow create the most striking visual contrasts.

Losar Festival

Ladakhi New Year (usually December/January) is celebrated with traditional dances, archery competitions, and elaborate feasts. Staying with a local family during Losar gives you an intimate glimpse into Ladakhi culture.

“In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.” — Albert Camus
