About This Attraction

Complete guide to Satkosia Gorge

About Satkosia Gorge

Satkosia Gorge is where the Mahanadi River, Odisha’s mightiest river, cuts through the Eastern Ghats in a dramatic 22 km gorge — creating sheer cliffs, dense forests, and an extraordinary wildlife habitat. The Satkosia Tiger Reserve covers 963 sq km of forest and is classified as a Tiger Reserve, Elephant Reserve, Gharial Sanctuary, and UNESCO Biosphere candidate.

Wildlife and Ecology

Satkosia is one of the very few places in India where you can see the critically endangered gharial (a fish-eating crocodilian with a distinctive snout) in its natural river habitat. The gorge also hosts mugger crocodiles, Indian rock pythons, spotted deer, elephants, and around 316 species of birds. Tigers are present but elusive — experienced naturalists on longer visits sometimes spot them near water sources.

The Visitor Experience

The highlight of Satkosia is river camping — sleeping in tents on the banks of the Mahanadi inside the gorge, watching gharials bask on sandbars, listening to elephants in the forest at night, and waking up to mist-shrouded cliffs. Boat rides through the gorge reveal the 12-metre walls rising on both sides.

Why It’s Worth Visiting

Satkosia is Odisha’s best-kept secret — combining tiger territory, river gorge drama, river camping, gharial spotting, and deep wilderness in a package that few parks in India can rival. Perfect for wildlife enthusiasts and adventure seekers who want something off the beaten path.
